How to Snowboard down Steep Terrain

Taking your riding skills to the next level can be a challenge, most people struggle to keep good composure when stepping it up into riding steeps on the mountain.

A lot of the time they will resort back to old habits and not embrace the new set of skills they have learned.

I see it time and time again.

– shifting weight to the back foot

– Not looking to where you want to go

– Poor execution of pressure control

– Not relaxing into the turn.

These are things you MUST understand how to control if you stand any chance against riding steep terrain.

Steeps can be fun but extremely challenging at the same time. Things can happen fast on steeper terrain, so caution must be exercised. Movements in steeps should be deliberate and calculated.

Commitment is required – if you hesitate, everything you are afraid of will come true.

…Small, skidded and closed turns should be used here to help aid speed control.

The main problem I see with people trying to snowboard steeps for the first time is obviously commitment to their ability.

It is this reason why you should slowly build up to steep terrain, try not to jump straight in there, Chances are if you do this you will end up creating bad habits and limiting your success in the snowboard progression.

EXPERT TIPS FOR SNOWBOARDING DOWN STEEPS

STEP 1) Stay relaxed to manage the pressure throughout the turn, especially at completion where the most pressure builds. Focus on continuous, strong and smooth movements to manage pressure.

STEP 2) Aim for a low edge angle through the control phase for small skidded turns. Due to the steep slope the edge angle increases through the completion of the turn as the board comes across the fall-line.

STEP 3) Aim for strong rotation through the lower body. The upper body should be utilized to anticipate the turn, aiding steering.

STEP 4) Longitudinal movements consist of a move fore at initiation to aid an early initiation and edge change. Pressure is then returned to the center through the control and completion, to maximize edge hold.

Another point I must make is to stay relaxed and soft in the knees, hard suspension never made travelling in a car any smoother.

Make sure your knees are acting independently but at the same time, working together.

In general, massive exaggeration of movements through the lower and upper body, Make sure your anticipation is on point as well

Take your time and watch out for other snowboarders, give yourself plenty of room to rip it up, choose your turning point carefully as you’re riding down the hill.

Look for good run outs after the turn, this will help you keep balance and prepare for the next turn.

One last thing…

MAKE sure you look across the hill and not down, this is HUGE and 97% of snowboarders I see out there don’t do this.

Once you understand how important looking to where you want to go is, you will consciously do it everywhere you ride.
